So there are so many articles on Natalie Portman and her reversal on her veganism. I have decided to not feed into that pit of ill and stupidity. I have read far too many ridiculous and unfounded claims against a vegan diet and you can only waste so much energy and time on the ignorant.

February,March & April
Sorry, but I thought that after a few months, I would get into the rhythm of being a stay at home dad and manage to stay up on the happenings. How wrong I was. So some of the bigger things I can recall off the top of my head will be mentioned but there is a lot that was over looked. Hope nobody feels let down.
The plan is to post everyevening week at least a couple interesting vegan related stories and any news or deals we hear about. Let me know if you hear any juicy gossip.

January '11 Updates
We are trying something different. As the month goes on and free time permits, the monthly posts will go up at the first event we hear about and randomly updated as we get new info. Check back with us.
NYC-
Dun-Well Doughnuts Launch Party- Christopher and Dan are launching a wholesale operation to provide their doughnuts to retail operations and coffee shops. Their aim is to build a brand and enough interest to warrant opening their own shop. (Seattle, Portland and Las Vegas all have vegan doughnuts, but they are made in the same kitchens with their dairy laden cousins) New York is looking forward to this shop and the "blogosphere" and "twitter-verse" are all in a frenzy!
When- 2 February at 7-9 PM
Where- Moo Shoes at 78 Orchard Street
What- Doughnuts, drinks from Pine Box Rock Shop and ice cream from Lula's Sweet Apothecary.
*The website isn't up yet. So check their blog for now. They are looking for a web designer, if you have the skills, drop a line. *
John's of 12th Street- This is good news for those of us who have business meetings or stubborn family who refuse to go a meal without any animal products. I am uneasy about giving my money to a establishment that also serves loads of dairy, let alone meat (like veal). I want to give them support for taking a year to work on their recipes and training with a vegan chef to get things right. They even make their own seitan. So what are we to do? Encourage them to keep going in the vegan direction and vote with our dollars, even though they serve things I find awful? Each person will have to make their own choice about this.

December-ish Update
Sorry, I started writing this when I had some free time and never got to finish it before the little one started sounding the alarm for food or a nappy change. So, some of the events have passed, but since it was started, it must be finished.
NYC-
Blossom Du Jour (The site is not up yet, but they are using Facebook in the meantime)- Their opening was back in the last week of Oct, but we haven't been able to get out much untill recently. Located just one street down and across 9th Ave from the original location, Pamela Elizabeth cut Cocoa V in half and now two stores are two cute siblings joined at the hip. G says that the pot pie and onion rings require you to visit.-
NYC Vegan Pizza Tour (This has since past, sorry)- Scott, of Scott's Pizza Tour is doing a special vegan pizza safari for his brother Jon. Jon is visiting from LA and two years ago went vegan. Sounds interesting but I don't know what spots they plan on hitting. Might be worth a shot.
Online-
The Ethical Man- Dan Mims has launched his online store, complete with styling advice from Dan himself. There is a limited amount of items currently. As the items are not only selected, but inspected for value and quality, the available selection will grow.
Vegan Essentials- Chicago Soy Dairy now has mozzarella sticks! They partnered with Chicago Diner to perfect their recipe. Now you can get them from Vegan Essentials only, unless you live in Chicago.
Upcoming events in 2011-
Vegan Pizza Day!- The world over on Saturday 29 January 2011 is being sponsered by Chicago Soy Dairy's Teese (They have re-formulated their mozzarealla style! Teese) and Quarrygirl.com
NYC Vegetarian Food Festival (shhh, it's really a vegan food festival undercover!)- Sunday 3 April 2011. It will take place at The Altman Building located on 135 West 18th Street, between 6th and 7th Avenues. They are looking for vegan food businesses to showcase their wares. Get in touch with them.
Vegans in Vegas- Described as- A first-of-its-kind event for vegan and veg-interested men Vegans in Vegas. New York's own Dan Mims of The Ethical Man has been named the first speaker.

My Visit to my Hometown, Orlando, FL
Upon a quick trip back home to the Sunshine State, I went to my one port in the storm, Ethos Vegan Kitchen. There I tried the daily special, Chik'n Marsala.
That was tasty and then when I went to get more water, I checked out the flyers organized in a little bookcase. In the time in between my last visit around the start of 2010 and August 2010, there was not one, but two new vegan businesses! First I saw that flyer for a small vegan bakery, Raphsodic Cooperative Company Bakery & Store. Fantastic, but then I saw something that amused and surprised me, Orlando now has a Vegan Convenience Store, Red Artichoke.
I also found out that a small pizza chain, Mellow Mushroom, carries Dayia and I was happy that they were versed in what doughs were and were not vegan. After thinking about it, I went with a delicious calzone. Hit the spot for an afternoon of hanging out with my 2 year-old niece.
When I left Florida in 2001, never did I think that Orlando with welcome me home with open arms and such yummy options that seem to expand in between every trip back to my hometown.

Vaute Couture Apointment- 12 Sept @ Moo Shoes
Leanne was sweet enough to squeeze us in for a quick last mintue appointment. After lots of glowing press, Vaute Couture has now started producing men's coats. From the 3 coats to choose from, I went with the Larson. It is a great coat that has a fitted cut. I would say it is both a tad sporty and dressy. The material is wind and water resistant. A wonderful thing is that all her coats are produced right here in NYC. Looking forward to sporting it this winter.

1st Gracious Gourmand 27 Aug
A night of deliciousness
This is an evening we had been building up in our minds for a couple of weeks. I purchased the tickets as a thank you to my partner for being so fantastic and supportive. Previously, we have been to another reoccurring #-course vegan dinner and enjoyed that, so we were ready for someone else's take. Also, the excitement was palpable as we had sampled Lagusta Yearwood's Lagustas Luscious chocolates at a trunk show at Cow Jones. So upon running a little later then expected, we arrived in Williamsburg and found parking 2 blocks away. It was inconvenient, being it put Champs right on our walk back to the car. The space, with an inconspicuous Private Event sign in the window, was an interesting space. We ended up taking the last open table, as everyone else had found their desired table. Then came the our host, Mr. Joshua Katcher and asked if we would like a libation created with an organic vodka, Kanon. The options were Watermelon Mint and Beet Apple and you could have them virgin if you desired. We did not partake.
The menu and our takes-
˚AMUSE BOUCHE˚
Baked scalloped corn with cashew cheese and tarragon
Him- Tasty with an interesting creamy/ crunchy texture
Her- Topping was pleasant but not enough to make up for the odds sour filling
˚STARTER˚
Yellow, red, orange and green tomato aspic - tomato essence aspic with yuzu juice - basil tomato powder - smoked Hawaiian guava wood sea salt
Him- fantastic use of tomatoes, the presentation was inviting
Her- Beautiful composition of flavors and textures, dish worked on all levels
˚SALAD˚
Moon and stars watermelon - herloom tomatoes - beets - aged cashew cheese
Kalamata olive vinaigrette
Him- Not being an olive fan, the different textures and flavors works great together.
Her- The beets should have been cooked rather then raw. The watermelon was an interesting inclusion that elevated the dish behinds a standard dinner salad.
˚MAIN˚
House made orecchiette - slow-cooked eggplant - rosemary-infused white bean cream sauce - pan-fried squash blossoms stuffed with smoky eggplant caviar
Him- Yum yum yum. I can't express my thoughts better then that.
Her- I cannot think of a bad thing to say about this dish. The slow roasted eggplant was some of the best I've ever had. The caviar was perhaps slightly too smokey for me.
˚DESSERT˚
Stone fruit and berries - coconut cream - husk cherries - Herbed pine nut cookie sandwiches with strawberry cream filling
Him- Stone fruit and berries was delightful. Tee cookie sandwiches were my favorites.
Her- The stone fruit and berries were a work of genius. The flavors were perfectly infused. Into a delectable little gift of a dessert.
˚MIGNARDISE˚
Chocolate truffle with olive oil ganache infused with Genovese basil and corn powder dusting
Him- Chocolate is what Lagusta Yearwood superbly.
Her- Perfect end to the meal

August Updates
NYC-
The Discerning Brute- Joshua Katcher is a busy man, or should we say, has been busier then his usual self. He has announced an Online store that is named Brave GentleMan and will be teaming up with chefs for a bi-weekly dinner event called Gracious Gourmand. The first chef is New Paltz's own Lagusta Yearwood. From what we can tell, it is somewhat akin to 4-Course Vegan. The menu changes each event and it's aim is to "challenge ordinary perceptions and preparations of fine food, expose visionary talent, and celebrate conscientious hedonism."
Blossom- The Duo who brought you Blossom have split-up but are still expanding vegan foods around the city. Besides the previous mentioned Blossom To Go shop, now christened Blossom Du Jour, Ronen Seri will be opening a vegan tapas bar, V-Note, in the former space of Blossom Bistro at 1522 First Avenue between 79th and 80th.

June/July News
So, some great things have been going on.
NYC-
Boneshakers- Brad and Megan are opening a vegan bakery in Williamsburg. It will be called Champs Family Bakery. It's location will be in the former Pat's Grocery Store on corner of Leonard and Ainslie St.
*Update* Champs is open as of the 4th of August, grand opening is happening Saturday, 14th of August. Call ahead to check what goodies they have. The danishes run out pretty quickly, thanks to G. +1.718.599.2743
Cocoa V- Word is that they will be shrinking and closing their dinning area. I was a bit sad to hear this until I learned that the former dinning room will be making way for a Blossom take-away shop! Now you don't have to wait for their kitchen to open when you have a severe craving.
Breakfast All Day- This tid-bit comes to us from Eater's NY page. We heard this place was in the planning stage when Passout Records was closing. 24 hour veggie restaurant and brought to you by the same person that started the now defunct Burritoville and Veg-City Diner. Location at 151 Grand and Berry. Let's hope the kitchen is better then when Veg-City Diner was around. They had fun comfort food but many couldn't handle the greasiness.
Vegan Divas- A new vegan desert line has come into existence. Their pastry chef is Camillo Sabella, who formerly baked for Life thyme Natural Market, Babycakes, and Peacefoods Café. They are available for now at 2 stores uptown, Butterfields.
The Little Bird Cafe- Yes, another vegan bakery. This "little" spot opened on Avenue B, between 11th and 12th. Now serving up vegan goodies and aiming to have beer and wine in the future.
Vaute Couture's Leanne Mai-ly Hilgart has taken up roots from her beloved Chicago and replanted herself here in NYC. Show her some love and check out the new line.
LA- Quarry Girl's site is branching out more and more with reviews from all over. They and their horde are traveling and relocating so they now review spots in LA and Southern California, Seattle, Portland, NYC, South Florida (or SoFla for Floridians like Eric) and London. If you are traveling to any of those spots, check them out.

April Updates!
So much news on the vegan front these last few months. Restaurants Galore!
NYC-
TeaNY- After the fire they have finally reopened!
Organic Village- Raw food in Queens! The day has finally come! We are planning on checking this out posthaste!
Otarian- A new chain of veggie restaurants with locations here and in the UK. Low impact diet is their aim. Let's write them and encourage them to stay away from dairy (especially due to the industries serious impact on the environment) and carry vegan cheese. Bleeker St and 8th Ave @ 56th store are now open.
S'nice- A new Soho location has opened! Sullivan between Prince and Houston.
Coming soon!
Breakfast All Day- A 24-hour vegetarian burger joint is set to open this summer in the old location of the now shuttered Passout Records. You read that right, 24-hours! Lets hope there are plenty of vegan options, right now we aren't too sure.
Philly-
Sweet Freedom Bakery- They are Philadelphia's first and only completely gluten-free, vegan, allergen-friendly bakery. Think of something in the vain of Babycakes, in Philly. They carry cupcakes, cookies, muffins, loaves, and do daily specialty flavors that rotate.
Sorry for the delay in posting new updates and finishing the write ups on the restaurants we have listed so far. Things have been busy here and we are trying to find a groove.

Terri, a new Restaurant opens
A great little take-away spot recently opened it's doors on 23rd Street and 6th Ave. In a former fro-yo shop, a vegan cafe has sprouted up. They label themselves a vegetarian, but are actually vegan and are soon to be kosher certified. We are planning to check them out this week and will update you after we do.

Happy 2010 to Everyone!
Along with the New Year, will come my attempts to more frequently update this blog. Here in my hometown of NYC, there have been a string of new vegan openings the last month or so. Here is the rundown of what I can think of.
*New*
Cafe Blossom UES- Blossom's new Upper East Side outpost. Menu is a little different from the UWS location.
Cocoa V- Vegan truffle and wine bar. (Currently, they are waiting on their beer & wine license)
Vinnie's Pizza A Greenpoint location opened and delivery will hopefully start in the next few weeks.
Sun in Bloom- This in the location of Organic Heights that closed recently, and Sun in Bloom took over the place the next day. I'm going to give them time before I try them out.
*Changes*
Pala Pizza- This LES restaurant, in the last 2 months, has introduced a entire half of their menu for vegans. The price is higher then Vinnies Pizzeria but the quality is great, as are the drinks.
Babycakes- Opened a new spot in L.A. If you're on the West-coast, check them out.
*Closed*
Organic Heights- The aforementioned restaurant.
Red Bamboo, Brooklyn- Still quite puzzled about this, as the owner cited a lack of customers but I usually saw the place at least 1/4 full, if not more.
More to come, stay tuned. Also, check the map for a restaurant near you.

Welcome to my Vegan Zagats site!
This blog was made to share my vegan findings from my travels. After a friend was surprised at all the restaurants I knew of, the idea to share my finds with more folks came to me. My hope is that you finds a new jem to visit and enjoy it as much as I do. (Or have a better experience if I didn't care for the place.)
